part 2 of the interview series has now been uploaded to youtube.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmewxug3kck.
for those who are unfamiliar, this is the second part of a series of videos covering an interview with candace conti and rick simons where the questions were posed by members of this forum.. questions answered in this video are.... .
(to rick, asked by hoffnung) why was watch tower bible & tract society of pennsylvania, together with more watchtower corporations, not sued as well?.
I'm going to step in here for just a moment to answer one part of Chaserious' questions and remarks.
If you look at the credits at the end of each video you will see that along with Kathleen Conti, I was filming the interviews. I was running the main camera and offscreen asking the questions.
When we came to that particular question I was so offended by its tone that I wasn't going to ask it. As "director" by default, I made a snap decision NOT TO ASK that question and just move on. Candace objected and told me to go ahead and ask. I looked at Rick Simons for support of my position and was shocked when he looked at Candace and then back at me and said, "If Candace is OK with it, so am I." So overruled by both of them, I read the question and turned on the camera. What you see in the video is their response as given.
Even though my involvement in this affair has been limited, mostly as videographer and editor of the first set of Conti videos, I can assure all of you of two things:
1. Candace has never backed down on answering a question. Although Mr. Simons was present at both tapings, I never once saw him coach Candace or tell her not to answer a question. She has never worked from prepared notes, but has always answered truthfully and straight from her heart.
And this answer is directed to responders like Chaserious:
2. Both Candace, and to an even greater extent for her mother, Kathleen, hurtful and non-supportive questions are painful and strike to their hearts. Honest questions about facts and legal issues are fine, but for some reason those who seem to have some problem with the outcome of the case do not go after the questions of law - but prefer to attack the reputations and personal life stories of Candace and Kathleen. Those kinds of questions completely miss the point of the case: The women are not on trial for any actions they may have taken or events in their lives. Jonathan Kendrick is a convicted child molester who is listed on local offender lists and also on the national Megan's Law listings. The elders at North Fremont have admitted that they failed to notify the authorities or to warn the other members of the congregation that a molester was in their midst. There is hard and undisputed evidence that the elders at North Fremont were following existing Watchtower policy and were getting direct orders from the Service and Legal departments in New York. Candace Conti's personal life was not on trial and never will be.
I believe in forums like this because they give us all a chance to vent, respond, and ask questions of our own. I don't believe this is the place to pass on gossip or question the reputations of others (except publicly exposed criminals).
Miss Conti answered the question and answered it well. Rick Simons clarified some of those issues as they related to the trial. Let's leave it at that.
Please, Chaserious, do us all a favor and show some respect for the Contis and just drop it. I can assure you that you've got it all wrong.

so, the two local congregations were planning to hold their memorial together at 7:30 at the local community center, but they had to make a last-minute change to their own hall, and i'm pretty sure it was because of me.. let me explain.... at work on monday afternoon, a co-worker returned from her lunchbreak and showed me the memorial invitation that was waiitng in her door when she went home for lunch.
i noticed the sticker on the back indicated the memorial was being held, not at the local hall, but at the community center.
from a past (non-jw) event i attended there, i knew they didn't allow alcohol (unless you pay for security guards), so i wrote to the center's coordinator:.
Back in the day all congregations had their own Kingdom Halls. They would open up a new one on the other side of town when growth required it. Every KH in medium to larger towns was sized for about 125 persons. In my town we started out with one KH downtown, added another on the far southend of the city, then another in between those two, and finally one on the westside in an attached suburb. All that growth in about 15 years. Population of that city and surrounding suburbs was around 35-40,000. Four Kingdom Halls served the area well.
Yes, only 85-100 JWs would show up for meetings, but that allowed a few extra seats for coats and handbags - and yes, even occasional visitors. When we had the Memorial or a special talk by the CO or DO (in those days CS and DS) all the seats would be taken, we'd have to break out some folding chairs, and a few of the brothers would have to stand up in the back.
But we didn't have to drive 20 miles (or further) to go to the KH. We didn't need MSes carrying portable microphones or holding them on long bars. We even had room for a piano so that someone could play our Kingdom Songs.
Sixty years later, guess what? Still just four Kingdom Halls serve the area. Population is well over 300,000. I am sure that there are Spanish congregations sharing KHs with English, and maybe a couple of other languages (Vietnamese) as well. There is no longer a KH in downtown, so everyone living near the center of town has to drive about 8 to 10 miles to the edges to go to meetings (can you guess where the ethnic and poorer neighborhoods are?).
So for my old home town, growth has obviously been stagnant, and access has been diminished. Yes, the KHs are newer and probably larger, but not ten times larger. My guess is that Memorials were also held in the JW assembly hall about 20 miles away to handle some of the overflow, but then you have to add in populations that are around the AH as well.
I guess the good news is that in the 60 years since I was in the area, JWs as a percentage of the total population has nose-dived. Maybe there is a god...

Is the doorbell 9 feet high? Or did they have to get down on their knees in their really nice slacks to ring it?

a while back we ran a "competition" whereby people could pose questions of candace conti and rick simons for them to answer in a video.. there were so many questions that we needed to do a series rather than just one video.
this first instalment is now on youtube.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhvfefpig4a.
here are the questions that were answered.... (to rick, asked by "exwhyzee") is there a possibility that part of the ruling, if you overcome the appeal, will be that the society must make an announcement outlining the details of the case to its members, as well as an apology to candace?.
Thanks for that extra effort, rip van winkle and Cedars!
Every little bit helps get the word out.
When can we expect it to be translated into Farsi? There must be thousands of deaf JWs in Iran that want to know. Is a little thing like that too much to ask?
JV
noticed the wording change this year.
no more memorial or lord's evening meal mentioned.. only an invitation to "the anniversary of jesus' death".
so, my question - who has caught this phrase and what does it mean?.
"If they really wanted more attendence here is what you do:..." seenitall
They could invite all apostates, disfellowshipped and disassociated former members - and suggest that they bring their video cameras and audio recorders. The Halls would be packed and replays of the Memorial would be all over the Internet and on Youtube.com.
What a wonderful opportunity to share this wonderful event to all - even those who would not step foot in a Kingdom Hall (or even be allowed in one!)
What an amazing witness to the world that would be!!!
And they could do it again next year. Then we could compare the two versions!
I guarantee that there wouldn't be an empty KH in the entire world. There would be more apostates there than regulars.
"Watch as self-important old men speak from a flowered stage in monotone voices."
"Hear other old men say multiple prayers that go on and on, repeating the same phrases again and again in the same monotone voices."
"Watch as glasses of FREE wine and plates of FREE crackers are passed to EVERYONE in the audience! Watch as absolutely NO ONE drinks the blessed (FREE) wine or eats the blessed (FREE) crackers! (Maybe a couple of people do, but they are certifiably insane and have been marked for discipline for several years over this issue.)"
"See the miracle of NEW ANOINTED being added to the 144,000 this year! Total Anointed should hit the Governing Body's goal of 288,000 by 2020!!!"
I'd go see that...

In the USA we've always had to register for the Selective Service within a few weeks of our 18th birthdays. I don't know of anyone who didn't do that.
In the USA, the military is now "all-volunteer," and the "draft" has not been used for many years. But Selective Service is still in place and can be reactivated very quickly should there be a national emergency (i.e., Red Chinese soldiers land on the beaches of Malibu, California, etc.) I don't know if local draft boards are still in place, as they would have nothing to do, but I know that they can grab enough politicians to volunteer for a sizable sum of money to staff those boards.
I think the last time any JWs actually went to prison was in the early 1970s.
The bigger issue is "national service." The USA has remnants of the Peace Corp and a couple of other semi-voluntary service organizations, but none are used as alternatives to actual military draft. The Watchtower's position has always been, and still seems to be along those lines, that anything connected with military functions is verboten. And yet I am amazed at how many JWs work for police departments in support roles and in courthouse clerical positions - clearly government jobs requiring questionable compromises.
